Meet The Author

My final semester has begun! My name is Ben Batz, I am a senior here at Gustavus, and I can’t believe I am putting the finishing touches on my college career! These days,  I catch myself reminiscing about the good times I’ve had as a Gustie. And the good times continue to roll! A new academic building, the big 150, and the largest first-year class in Gustavus history have made for an exciting year. But, it’s hard to ignore the prominent question: “What are you going to do after Gustavus?” Let’s face it, there’s a lot of crazy stuff happening these days: political parties are continually crossing wires, the economy is an ever-growing headache. The nation and the world are in a state of constant unrest. What better time to show the gifts that Gustavus has given me?

It’s an exciting time to be a Gustie. It’s equally exciting to be moving on. It begs the question: As my journey at Gustavus comes to a close, what am I taking with me into the journey beyond Gustavus? Surely, it’s more than a diploma. What is school for? What are we expected to learn? How does a college education change the way we engage the world?

Join me, with the help of the  Office of Admissions and the Center for Servant Leadership, in exploring what it means to be a college student in the Liberal Arts and a what it means to take the education beyond campus to serve the common good.
